I am looking to create my first website and have a few ideas of how to get a domain name registered, but looking for any tips.
My intention so far is to simply purchase the service from any number of web hosting companies. I don’t need any web hosting space. Is there a better(cheaper/free) way?

I use godaddy.com for domain registration. Their prices are resonable and they have sales often. Their control panel is also easy to use.
Take care!

I would actually not go through your hosting provider to register the domain. They can actually “own” your domain if you leave their service, depending on their TOS.
I would go directly to a registrar like Godaddy to register your domain and then sign up for hosting service separately. For hosting, I do like which has unlimited bandwidth usage and unlimited file storage for ~$100.00 USD / year.

Don’t trust any cheap service, many of them don’t allow you to have full control on your domain name. If you’re going to buy domain names, is the lowest cost service which is full-featured and really works for you ($9.99). They offer free extras with every domain name:
Quick Blogcast
Hosting with Web site builder
Personalized Email Account
Starter Web Page For Sale/ Parked Page
Domain Forwarding
Domain Masking
100-Pack Email Forwarding
Total DNS Control
Change of Registration
Status Alerts
Domain Locking

If you want to have a website, you will HAVE to have web hosting space. Any page you put up takes up a certain amount of space. I would suggest you try Hostamina.com.
You should avoid hosts that offer “unlimited” space/bandwidth as this is somewhat of a scam. You should also avoid hosts that offer ridiculous amounts of space/bandwidth, such as 10GB space for only $5/month. Hosts like this overload and oversell servers, and are bad news for anyone who wants reliability.
You should also avoid answers here that send you to review sites, as those sites make money off commissions and rank hosts based on how much money they’ll get paid, not on how good they are. You should avoid answers here that look like they are affiliate links as well, for the same reason.
Hostamina.com is exactly what you need. Support is great! They will help you set up your website, and they will provide you with any help you need. Note that I am not using an affiliate link or sending you to a review site.
-They provide awesome personalized support
-They know how to handle all your business needs
-They never oversell
-They never overload servers
-They offer realistic plans
-You actually get what they say you get
-There is no fake “unlimited” space or bandwidth
-There is no fake “50,000 GB” space or bandwidth
-They will help you with anything you need help with
-They will put you on a super fast server
-Every server has at least dual quad core processors
-Every server has at least 4GB of RAM
-Every server has strict account limitations
-Most companies average 300 accounts per server
-Hostamina averages 100 accounts per server
-Instant Shopping Carts, Blogs, Forums, PHP-Nuke, Joomla, and more!

1and1.com
Godaddy.com
The two above are your best bet and MOST reliable. I have over 400 domains / websites and 90% of them are at GoDaddy.
Here are a few coupons for GoDaddy:
.info for $1.49 - no code needed
.net for $7.99 - gdp1009q
.com for $7.60 - gdbb776
Another option is to buy domains directly from the domain owners.
A quick tip: If you do not already have a specific domain in mind, a great website that can help you is. You can type in a word or words you would like in your domain and the site will pop out domains avaliable which are similar to your chosen words.
If you have additional questions or need some help feel free to contact me.
